Curriculum
Please click on the button to review the district's curriculum overview. Detailed explanation of your child's curriculum will be given during back to school night. |
Homework
Your child is expected to do homework independently. If for some reason, you see your child seeking a lot of assistance in doing the work or feel that your child finds homework time stressful, please contact me so we may find the best way to help him/her.
Although homework is meant to be independent work, it is a great time to have conversations about their learning. Talk to them about what they understand of the assignment. Ask them questions like, " What are the directions to do this assignment?", " What are you learning from this work?", "Did you learn this in school today?" Sometimes just asking them what they were thinking through their learning process gives us insight into their learning habits.
Your child will have about 30-45 minutes of homework every day. Homework is always something that they are familiar with and will have had a chance to practice it in school. To optimize their learning, I try to recognize each child's academic needs and tailor homework to suit their academic needs. Please don't be alarmed when your child has different homework than his/her classmate. No two children are the same. Why should their homework be?
On some rare occasions, I understand that your family may be busy and unable to complete the homework on the assigned date. While I understand the increasing demands of a busy family I also expect that your child make up the homework within the next couple of days. This habit teaches the child responsibility and accountability. Please send me a note explaining that you are aware that homework was not completed for the day.

Rocket Math Rocket math is a program we use to help your child learn math facts. Each child has an individual goal. We keep track of their progress by coloring in each level of a rocket as we move levels. Hence the name, "Rocket Math"
You can help your child by creating flash cards to help them memorize math facts. You can include memorizing math facts as part of their homework routine. Sometimes dividing up the facts they have to master and giving them a few facts each night will help them reach their goal without being overwhelmed.Remind your child to use inverse operations to memorize their facts. For example, 5+7 = 7+5; 7 * 3 = 3 * 7.
Students can always bring home extra sheets to practice. Encourage your child to bring home a rocket math sheet so they can practice every night.

Reading
Remember, taking it slow works. Give your child the time to slow down and enjoy the book. Let them read it at their own pace. Pushing them to read harder, longer texts when they are not ready can backfire and make them a reluctant reader. Children often love the experiences reading brings. Make it worthwhile. Cuddle up together and get lost in a book. Make it a special time of your day to relax and bond with your child!
- Your child is expected to read every night. You can encourage this habit by joining them! Just like game night, encourage a family book club night. You can also involve your child in creating a family reading challenge. Choose different genres to read from and make it a competition to read as many books in each genre. You can also choose topics instead of genre if that makes it appealing to your family. How about choose a book to read together as a family and then watch the book come to life as a movie!

Student Work
I believe that feedback is an important part of learning. When I check and return your child's work, there is often feedback about their work. Please inculcate the habit of reviewing completed work and paying attention to the feedback It is very important that a child feels accomplished and proud of their work! Sometimes, I might ask a question or make a comment to stretch their thinking. This is a great opportunity to scaffold their learning at home. Sometimes I simply ask that they check and return their work to me. Please make sure that your child follows those directions to deepen their learning.

Volunteers
Volunteering is a great way to show your child that what happens in school is important and it is a priority in your life. Volunteers are an integral part of my classroom. Please be mindful that while you volunteer in our class you are looked upon as a trusted adult in the eyes of our students. Keeping whatever academic and behavioral information you may witness firsthand is vital in keeping their trust.

Birthday Recognition
Recognizing your child's birthday in our class creates a sense of belonging and community.
If there is more than one birthday, we will have birthday recognitions at different times during the same day. I ask that you please give me at least a week's notice so I may be able to include the recognition in our plans for the day.
